Meh. A rather predictable storyline. Down-on-his-luck lawyer with a girlfriend that is about to leave him. Office above a bar. Clients that can't pay him. Close friend that is big, strong and happy to throw his muscle around. Antagonist with lots of money and is therefore able to pull off some crazy, highly unlikely things. So, it was like lots and lots of other detective stories--a lot of action and little character development.

Deadlocked Lou Mason Thrillers Book 4 edition by Joel Goldman Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
The one thing that strongly comes through Joel Goldman's legal thrillers is his background as a lawyer. While some writers have to research to make their novels believable, Goldman relies on experience.
The mysterious death of a husband and wife takes fifteen years to be truthfully solved. Goldman, once again, weaves his readers through the perils of a murder investigation, and how sometimes the doing such a thing is a risk to everyone involved. What I liked most about this novel is the lead character, Lou Mason. I'm not sure what it is about this guy; he's definitely no badass good with a gun and knows any formal of fighting skills. Still Mason puts everything on line, using wit as his main strength, which is different from other thrillers, including my own books.
It's a chance Goldman takes, like Mason, giving something different and it works! The plot of this novel thickens to the point of the reader holding their breath, and then Goldman pulls it all together leaving you satisfied and content and ready to read the next in the Mason Thrillers.
Usually, I also tell something that I don't like about a book, but with this one, there's nothing to tell. A vigorous, heart-pumping plot, and thrills on each page you turn. Any avid reader couldn't ask for more.
This is my second Goldman book that I've read and I can honestly say that I am a fan.
I found it to be an okay suspense book, but I did have a few problems with it. Sometimes, the coincidences were too much to suspend disbelief for. Some of the characters were poorly developed. For instance, his bad guy was 1 dimensional - all bad, But perhaps most of all, I found myself skipping pages and pages - which were detailed descriptions of Kansas City, or aspects of the weather or something that I would have been happy with one paragraph. Whenever I find I am skipping pages, that is not good.
On the plus side, it was a convoluted plot - that's good. He tied up all the loose ends at the end. That's good. And it certainly qualified as a suspenseful novel. And in spite of skipping some pages, I finished it. And I enjoyed it. So, for what it's worth, I give it a qualified recommendation.
I started this series out of order with Deadlocked, the 4th in the Lou Mason series but this didn't hamper my enjoyment of the story and while some of the ongoing characters' backgrounds were slightly puzzling, was still able to enjoy them. The story line of a woman whose son has been executed for a murder she firmly believes he did not commit takes Lou through a maze of characters and plot lines, making false assumptions and leaving him unable to trust anyone including the lawyer he has to hire when he, himself is accused of murder. I also found Kansas City itself to be surprising and an enjoyable part of the story. Probably like many people who have never been there, I thought of it as a boring, flat and completely uninteresting town but Goldman's descriptions of the different parts of town, the impact the weather has on its citizens and its history were fascinating and he is good at the descriptive passages while keeping the plot at center stage.
I am looking forward, now to going back to the 1st book in the series and continuing through.
When reading or writing reviews for these types of books I think it's best to consider them for what they are.. entertainment, escape, and mental stimulus. For these reasons I'm a great fan of Goldman and his books. Every great series needs a compelling hero and Lou Mason is a satisfying lead. He is sarcastic, resourseful, reckless, and vulnerable. Deadlocked is a book most anyone can enjoy. It's easy reading, Interesting, and keeps you guessing. Some argue Goldman ventures off the plot path too much spending precious page space for details of the city, history, architecture, etc. I find these departures provide good rest stop for the story and give the reader opportunities to slide deeper into the context of the characters.. (the city and scenes that are the backdrop to each story). Others suggest Goldman introduces too many characters in his books but while I agree there can be a lot to follow, I think it's good brain test to keep track of the characters and story. What's best of these books is that you can easily navigate them to enjoy the books as a whole, or just the parts and pieces that compel you. The story alone is always great. Deadlocked has a combination of suspence in the story of the killers, the survivors, and Mason's own personal discoveries about his in parents death. I like that Goldman doesn't always answer every question and is bold enough to force readers to form their own conclusions. This book Mason struggles with the passion of his life and career and a woman he loves. Don't get me wrong g I'm a guy that likes suspence, action, and the gritty hero but I can really handle Mason's charm and sadness, his solitary life, balancing his likeability and sheer frustration with his choices. His friendships are tested, he is conflicted over women, and has love/hate relationships that just work overall. I get that these books are not for everyone, but for me they entertain.. they pull me into imaginary lives and drama that is real enough to keep me in that space for as long as I want to be. Anything can be over analyzed and flaws can be exposed if you look hard enough, but if you just relax and start turning pages I promise it's not difficult to make it to the end.. off to read the next book in this series...
